Cartoon animals

Developing the cartoon lion

Today the primary art explorers challenge was to create their own cartoon animal. I used a technique from Paula Briggs book Drawing Projects for Children. Instead of using prescribed shapes often taught when drawing cartoons the children created their cartoon by looking at a photo of a real animal. After initial sketches of the real animal (see the lion below) they were asked think about how to turn it into a cartoon ( we spent quite a while discussing what makes a cartoon). Although tricky the results were all unique and original. We also had a go at using a prescribed method which was also fun. I think the two techniques work well together.
